About The Work
This unique work from Aura Rosenberg, (Sam Lewitt/Carmen) is from her acclaimed series Who Am I? What Am I? Where Am I?, in which a number of artists were asked to collaborate on a photo portrait of a child. Centered on the intersection of art and play, Rosenberg’s goal for the project was to offer both the participating artist and child model an alternative view of themselves and their work. Says Rosenberg of this process, “these works became three-way collaborations based on play. While, for children, play is a way to learn, perhaps art offers adults a chance to play.” The project spanned over twelve years and involved over eighty artists, including John Baldessari, Lyle Ashton Harris, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, Marilyn Minter, Laurie Simmons, Kiki Smith, Tony Oursler and Lawrence Weiner. In this image, artist Sam Lewitt incorporates a photograph of a male figure reading a French translation of Complete Works by Edgar Allen Poe.
