About The Work
In 2004, the French handbag-maker Longchamp launched their internationally recognized line of ‘Le Pliage’ bags, a practical, reasonably priced handbag collection. To celebrate the line's 10-year anniversary, Longchamp asked artist Tracey Emin to collaborate on a collection. This collaboration was based on a theme: that of an “International Woman” who, carried her baggage with her from city to city, tirelessly searching for an “International Man” with whom she could experience an “International Love”. The project was an ideal fit for Emin, whose artistic media and techniques often involvessalvaged fabrics, patchwork, embroidery and drawing. Emin’s art is highly confessional and draws upon her life experiences in a variety of media that include story-telling, drawing, filmmaking, installation, painting, neon, photography and appliquéd textiles. Emin included some of her favoured techniques to create the Longchamp line, including destruction and reconstruction of textiles, patchwork, embroidery and painting. What makes this bag unique is that it was exceptionally hand signed by the artist during the opening of her solo exhibition, Stone Love, at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York on May 5, 2016. (The outer leather flap contains text that reads: Les Pliages Longchamp Type "M"//Modèle Déposé - made in France. The affixed rosette ribbon, located on recto (front) of the bag, contains a drawing of the Longchamp logo created by the artist, along with her printed signature.)
Frontside: Large pink felt '1623' over floral background
Backside: Blue felt letters on floral patches making the words 'ALWAYS ME' over red corduroy and floral background
