About The Work
Chris Ofili is known for work that uses dense layers of vivid colors and intricate detailing in a variety of materials. Poolside (Skowhegan) is an example of the artist’s signature style transposed for more minimal means. This depiction of a man in coattails serving a naked woman next to a swimming pool is a loose, informal composition that avoids cartoonishness through unconventional shapes and sleights of perspective. While Ofili’s earliest etchings were dense geometric abstractions, this work exemplifies the artist’s exploration of racial and sexual themes in figurative abstraction.
