About The Work
In Greek mythology, Medusa, the only mortal and the most beautiful of three Gorgon sisters, angers Athena by having an affair with Poseidon, who retaliates and transforms Medusa into a repulsive being with snakes for hair along with a powerful gaze that literally petrified men, turning them to stone. Hosmer challenges the dominant male visual and literary dramatic tradition focused on a decapitated head with writhing snakes for hair. In contrast, Hosmer invokes an alternate story of Medusa with neo-classical restraint lacking brutality, a focused gaze, and an attractive face still attached to her body.
Hosmer’s Medusa marble busts are in the collections of: Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI, Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, Minneapolis, MN, and the Hood Art Museum, Dartmouth College Dartmouth, NH.
