About The Work
Female sovereigns were a favorite subject for Hosmer’s monumental statues including Queen Zenobia, the 3rd c.e. ruler of Palmyra (modern day Syria) who conquered Egypt, and much of Asia Minor until she was defeated by Roman Emperor Aurelian. Unlike Cleopatra, a favorite subject of her fellow male artists, who commits suicide instead of submitting to Rome, Hosmer chooses Zenobia who used her diplomatic skills to avoid assassination and depicts her with dignified resolve, as she is marched through the streets of Rome as a war trophy.
Hosmer’s Zenobia in Chains marble busts and sculptures are in the collections of: Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens San Marino, CA; Saint Louis Museum of Fine Arts, Saint Louis, MO; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, CT; and Watertown Free Public Library Watertown, MA.
