Powerful female rulers depicted at decisive moments with historic geo-political consequences captivated Hosmer throughout her career. The ornate full-size statue of 15th century c.e. Queen of Spain, Isabella of Castile is the last known work by Hosmer and the last of her three celebrated female sovereigns. It was commissioned by the Daughters of Isabella, a Chicago based suffragist organization for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition where Hosmer, Anne Whitney and other female sculptors refused to exhibit their work in the Women’s building and exhibited in the Statuary Hall instead.
