About The Work
The faun in Roman mythology (like the satyr in Greek mythology) was a half human and half goat woodland spirit that captured the imagination of artists starting with Praxiteles in 4th century b.c.e. In the 19th century when women were barred from college education and the anatomical training required to become a neo-classical sculptor, Hosmer’s skill and audacity to carve a nearly nude life size male figure in marble challenged all societal gender norms. Hosmer adeptly balances sensuality with humor, the baby satyr playing a trick on the drunken/sleeping faun, to successfully aid the work’s reception at International Exhibitions.
Hosmer’s The Sleeping Faun marble sculptures are in the collections of: Iveagh House, Dublin, Ireland, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA, and the High Museum, Atlanta, GA.
