About The Work
An adaptation of his earlier print of the same name, Jasper Johns’s 1990 lithograph Ventriloquist contains many of the visual signs that the artist has played with for decades. Portions of the American flag can be seen near the edges and much of the picture plane is made of a large “I,” which is depicted as having been taped to the paper. Here, Johns reproduces his own work, acting as a kind of dummy that voices his own previous artistic output, complicating the notion of artistic originality and persistent identity.
