About The Work
Robert Rauschenberg’s 1981 lithograph Lily Scent suggests a message poetically lost in translation. In a superimposed image before a coop-like structure, which is closed with chicken wire, two dogs scour the ground. The lower quarter of the picture is taken up by a centralized and clear image of a lily stalk. Rauschenberg’s anarchistic blending of imagery leads viewers to consider not only the specific meaning of his particular images, but also the way that images are combined or seen juxtaposed within various contexts.
