About The Work
To step into the world of a Bjarne Melgaard creation is to engage with a captivating, albeit twisted, artistic vision—a distinctive realm that filters the everyday though an alternate reality. At times brightly cheerful and others frighteningly dark, Melgaard’s loose and emotive style is emphasized by a light color palate of pinks and purples. In this large-scale Untitled work, the traditional self-portrait is literally turned on its head—painted sideways with disturbingly large features. Tears stream from unblinking, confrontational eyes, and Melgaard’s features appear to melt towards the floor. Testing the limits of space and genre, he intertwines a wide range of influences in this unique work ranging from musicians to the fragmentation of personal identity.
