About The Work
Shahzia Sikander, who has a penchant for personal and cultural symbology, has become widely known for her elegant use of reference, especially as a means of exploring her own identity. Naga is an exquisite example of this, a meticulous, ghostly rendition of an ancient deity. Myths concerning this snake god, here portrayed with a dragon-like head, have appeared for hundreds of years in various religious sects including Hinduism and Buddhism. The Sanskrit epic Mahabharata also details the exploits of Naga, who is depicted by Sikander as eerily spirit-like, but separate from any scene or context. Whether this composition aims to represent Naga as a personal daemon or part of a more general cultural conscious is unknown, but there can be no denying the powerful presence of Siknader’s iconography.
