About The Work
Placed inside a wooden box,
Camelo
(Portuguese for "camel") features a motorized figurine, 1000 pins, 1000 collar stiffeners, and wooden tables. The work was inspired by a vendor Meireles encountered as a child who sold merchandise off three camels, two of which carried shirt pins and collar stiffeners. Meireles says he found it incomprehensible, and at the same time attractive and strange, that someone could make a living selling such insignificant objects. The third camel sold puppets made of rubber and paper, which he found magical. He incorporated all three of the vendor's products to make
Camelo
