About The Work
In this multimedia print on Somerset textured paper, artist Shahzia Sikander brings the traditional art of Indo-Persian miniature painting into dialogue with the art of the present day. Widely known for her elegant use of personal symbology, Sikander integrates Hindu and Muslim culture, combining allegories, myths and deities from both societies into her collage-like compositions. This piece, Maligned Monsters II, depicts two female figures, interlocked in a sensual pose and flanked by various printed symbols. The title makes reference to the renowned 1977 text by historian Partha Mitter, Much Maligned Monsters: History of European Reactions to Indian Art.
