    About The Work

As major literary figures of their time, the Brownings were the most famous members of the Anglo-American expatriate community of writers and artists in Italy and had a close personal relationship with Hosmer. The sculpture consists of Robert and Elizabeth’s right hands clasped as the symbol of marriage. They are not the passive loose grip of young love, but a pact, active and purposefully posed as we recall Barrett Browning’s poem, “How do I love thee, let me count the ways...

Hosmer’s The Clasped Hands of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning bronze hands are in the collections of: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, Armstrong-Browning Library, Baylor University, Waco, TX, Boston Public Library, Rare Book and Manuscript, Department, Boston, MA, Newark Museum, Newark, NJ, Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, MO, Wellesley College, Special Collections Margaret Clapp Library, Wellesley, MA, Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe College, Harvard University Cambridge, MA, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and National Portrait Gallery, London, England.
