About The Work
For this sculpture, Nayland Blake, a multi-disciplinary artist whose works address themes of sexual and racial identity, collaborated with Costello Tagliapietra, a husband-husband fashion design team known for their lumberjack style of plaid flannel shirts, suspenders, and bushy beards. The doll was created especially for Fire Island Residency, the first residency program in the United States exclusively for LGBTQ artists. A burly "bear" with open arms and a removable dress, it is a humorous and cuddly work that captures the spirit of the island, a place long-steeped in LGBTQ history.
