About The Work
The work of video artist Mika Rottenberg is expressive, yet methodical, with a controlled visual vocabulary. Systematic in its execution, Rottenberg’s work combines various built symbols, imagined corporeal elements, and production spaces to create compositions reminiscent of surreal, anatomical machinery. This unique photo work, Hand, is from a special project in the 2008 W Magazine Art Issue, for which Rottenberg built an elaborate and textured set in Harlem. Like a glimpse into one of the colorful and complex scenes in her videos, this image is playfully bizarre, but with deep conceptual undertones.
