About The Work
EARTH AND AIR is demonstrative of Mary Heilmann’s attention to both off-kilter shapes and abstracted space. In this case, her imperfect rectangles originate in the upper left of the composition, suggesting the titular land. Toward the center of the print, they continue to multiply and grow within the whiteness of the air, essentially dividing the floating dabs of red paint and ultimately extending beyond the print’s edges.
