About The Work
Laurie Simmons' fascination with dolls grew from the power she saw in their stiff or limited expressions which lend a certain neutrality to the figures. Placing these hand-held props in various situations and settings Simmons was able to have complete control over scenes where viewers could project their own emotions. The ventriloquist, then, became a natural theme for the artist interested in puppeteering and stage setting. Simmons pursued ventriloquism with thorough research in the late 1980s and finally made a number of dolls herself, dressing them in various clothes for the installation Clothes Make the Man (1992). The sideways, wide-eyed grin of a dummy in pyjamas gives a humored expression of an alter-ego who knows full-well who his master is.
