About The Work
This mixed-media lithograph reflects Kiki Smith's interest in experimenting with printmaking processes as well as the spirituality suffused throughout her work, which often includes depictions of natural and mythical worlds. In Europa, Smith uses various material techniques to invoke the sense of “flesh” in her depiction of Jupiter’s moon, captioned “I am the flesh of the full moon.” The wrinkled vellum and dark rust mottling in this double moon image draws comparisons to feminine biology, creating a thought-provoking sentiment of celestial nature.
