About The Work
Despite his playful, cartoon-like style, Carroll Dunham's images are often dark, violent, and sexual, drawing on number of character-based narratives. Known for his conceptual approach to image making and his interest in the relationship between figuration and abstraction, Dunham says of his work, "I know that my art exists in this kind of tension between irrational, almost goofy, things and extremely tight, formal, organized things. That tension is where I live." In this portfolio of 8 etchings, the artist renders the story of an amorphous figure in a black top hat through eight abstracted scenes—Hills, Trees, House, Storm, Coast, Pond, Town, and Lost.
