About The Work
Created exclusively for PA Magazine, an annual publication with a focus on critical and visual dialogue between contemporary photographers, John Baldessari’s lithograph Face and Whale was created as part of a project with film set designer Naomi Sholan. In his trademark style of cut out imagery and graphic juxtapositions Baldessari interacts with the work of Sholan, who has designed for films such as “American Beauty,” “Constantine,” “The Replacement Killers,” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Reminiscent of his 2010 work Two Whales (with People), this darkly playful cover print set the narrative tone for a unique collaboration.
