In the late 1980s, Sherman began exploring darker themes in her work, composing nightmarish tableaus that incorporated prosthetic limbs, masks, and ambiguous fluids. Unlike her signature costumed self-portraits, the central figures in these works are dolls or mannequins, resulting in uncanny, grotesque images.
