About The Work
Carsten Höller’s Canaries series details the end results of a project in which he selectively bred birds to produce new, “customized” varieties. Höller has long been a passionate ornithologist, and his scientific expertise allowed him to exert impressive control over the breeding process. The birds reproduced relatively quickly, but because of the purposefully unlikely genetic combinations Höller encouraged, the resulting canaries were all sterile. They are simultaneously the first, and the last, of their kind. Höller’s photogravure prints (this one was made in an edition of 20) beautifully document his liminal creations, while also recalling the traditional art of ornithological illustration.
