About The Work
Upon his arrival in New York City in 1974, Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto visited the American Museum of Natural History. “I made a curious discovery while looking at the exhibition of animal dioramas,” he has said. “The stuffed animals positioned before painted backdrops looked utterly fake, yet by taking a quick peek with one eye closed, all perspective vanished, and suddenly they looked very real.” In Sugimoto’s estimate, it’s no matter whether or not a subject is real or fake—once photographed, it “is as good as real,” as is the case with these taxidermied condors, who seemingly perch before breathtaking mountainous scenery. California Condor, which was included in Sugimoto’s early “Diorama” series, was reproduced in 2012 in collaboration with Jean-Yves Noblet Contemporary Prints. An edition of 60, a portion of sale proceeds will benefit Art21’s programs and initiatives.
