About The Work
Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a new work by Rory Pilgrim, as part of Chisenhale Editions.
Drawn from a coloured pencil composition in Pilgrim’s own sketchbook, each screenprint is uniquely printed with subtle colour variations depicting mist and hand-embellished by the artist. Neither fully domesticated nor totally wild, horses are a regular sight on the Isle of Portland. The galloping horse here becomes a symbol for freedom-seeking, despite being constrained by the isle’s natural borders of the sea and clifftops. With a horse released from its enclosure, Pilgrim asks us to consider freedom as elusive. Neither entirely unconfined nor altogether captive, the horse exists in an in-between state.
This edition has been produced exclusively by Rory Pilgrim to support Chisenhale Gallery’s commissions and public programming. The related commission is likewise based on the Isle of Portland, developed in partnership with HM Prison Portland and young people from the island. In the ongoing long-term project, Pilgrim works with communities collaboratively to build trust and consider how we come together and strive for social change.
