About The Work
Conceptual artist R.H. Quaytman works in series, or what she calls “chapters”—each one based on the site where it is first exhibited. This work is from Chapter 24, paintings and prints based on the Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach’s image archive and permanent collection. Here, she nods to Lucio Fontana’s Spatial Concepts , punctured canvases that break through the two-dimensional surface in order to highlight the space behind the picture. Similarity, Quaytman has said that she “seek[s] to maintain and simultaneously disrupt painting’s absolute presence.”
