About The Work
Known for his prolific drawings, Marcel Dzama has expanded his practice to encompass three-dimensional work and film and has developed an immediately recognizable language that draws from a diverse range of references and artistic influences, including Dada and Marcel Duchamp. Like many of Dzama's compositions Warhol’s Pawns uses reoccurring motif to explore themes of performance, games, violence and bizarre fantasy. A bust-up portrait set against a bright blue background evokes the graphic silkscreens of Andy Warhol, with a Dzama twist—a polka-dotted ski mask, often associated with robbery or terrorism, is used to create a darkly twisted image of humanity.
