About The Work
During the late 60s, Nevelson began experimenting with new materials to expand her practice beyond her signature use of wood. She embraced plexiglass, cast resin, and steel. This polyester resin work is immediately recognizable as Nevelson's, with her signature aesthetic of an intricate facade in black.
"Night Leaf" is composed of matte, monochromatic black boxes showcasing variations of a simple leaf design, almost a decorative interpretation of lattice. Nevelson's forms and patterns can range from organic/stylized to otherwordly...yet she creates these geometric abstractions often using industrial means or castoffs. The results are always visually rich, engaging, and open to interpretation.
"Night Leaf" was created at the apex of Nevelson's career and is included in the permanent collections at The Smithsonian (Washington), The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), and The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis).
