About The Work
Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex sculptures. She was also an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, and working with some of the best printmaking studios across the United States.
Nevelson, whether working in sculpture or in two dimensions has a strict palette often using exclusively black. While there are works with elements in white, gold, or raw wood, Nevelson almost entirely avoids color. When Nevelson does use color it is used sparingly with maximum effect.
Roman Black is a paradigm of Nevelson’s printmaking from this period, featuring her signature layered approach of neutral and monochromatic hues. While shiny, reflective and textured, this print still manages to make use of Nevelson’s signature color, black, which is accentuated by metallic sheets and newsprint clips.

In this work, the inclusion of iridescent blues and splashes of mauve seems to enable the black elements to truly pop.
