About The Work
The Suguta Valley is separated from Lake Turkana by a chain of volcanoes. It is one of the most inhospitable places on earth with temperatures sometimes reaching 60 degrees centigrade and yet small numbers of Turkana families choose to make it their home.
I arrived at one of the villages with a cousin of a local woman, and received a warm welcome, including from this elderly lady. We stayed until the temperature of the volcanic road had cooled enough for us to travel without destroying our vehicle’s tires. Not long after we left the valley was raided by Pokot tribesmen to steal the goats and livestock of these impoverished communities.
John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day-to-day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in traditional ways of life.
