About The Work
I was drawn to this Rendille lady by her startling blue eyes and magnetic stare. It was fascinating to see one or two others in the community and other settlements of the Kaisut Desert in northern Kenya with the same unusual characteristic.
She was waiting with many other women for the weekly aid drop that provided much needed grain and oil. The drought which affected northern Kenya on and off for a decade has significantly altered Rendille life. Communities have become less nomadic as the land has become less able to support even the relatively modest resource demands of nomadic life.
John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day-to-day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in traditional ways of life.
