About The Work
Since his famous Banality series of 1988, Jeff Koons has created recognizable, creatively re-imagined figures, such as animals, cartoon characters or pop stars, that sit on the borderline of kitsch and critique, plumbing the imagery of mass culture. One of his most well-known, and well collected, motifs is the balloon shape—a structure that Koons has recreated in steel, porcelain and resin over the years. This Balloon Venus sculpture was made in collaboration with Dom Pérignon Rosé and inspired by one of the most iconic statues in art history, the Venus of Willendorf. Recreating the famed voluptuous figure as a bright pink “balloon” structure, Koons draws together elements of history, pop and commercialism.
