About The Work
The French collective Claire Fontaine studies the function of found material in contemporary art, and this untitled edition of 25 constitutes a particularly thought-provoking investigation. Each of these aluminum ingot bars corresponds to the weight of a bag of recycled aluminum cans that Claire Fontaine previously installed in an exhibition at San Francisco’s CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. This continual reuse of the cans—first as consumer products, then as elements of a gallery installation, and finally as condensed sculptures—pointedly demonstrates the various value systems driving contemporary culture.
