About The Work

OKUKWE. RC is a collection of black resin sculptures inspired by the Gabonese origins of Jean-Félix. Born of a Franco-Gabonese father and a Gabonese mother, he chose to draw from his paternal culture the elements that will make the identity of his sculptures.

OKUKWE takes its appearance and name from the Myènès people, a people living in Gabon. The Myènès practice ancestor worship and often call on them for different ceremonies.

To do this they make a body that is supposed to accommodate the spirit of the ancestor invoked, once the body is possessed the whole is called OKUKWE or IKUKU term which means Revenant.

The artist chooses to use this cultural element in order to get closer to his ancestors both in practice and in form, it is for him a way to keep the torch lit by walking on the path that they have traced.

Jean Félix realizes that the racism he has suffered since his arrival in France is in part due to the lack of information on his native country and its culture, he then decides to undertake a process aimed at promoting this ancestral culture in a contemporary language.

It is from this union of past and present that his first OKUKWE.RC sculpture was born.

Like the sculptures of his ancestors, the objects he produces have a dual purpose: they are both accessories and works of art.

Through his work, Jean Félix tries to open the doors of Gabon to the world thanks to his sculptures with atypical shapes and dense colors.
