About The Work
OKA is a sculpture from the Archives collection of the artist Jean-Félix Bourdette. The ARCHIVE project is essentially made up of sculptures. The artist operates an original translation of the complexity of the bridges linking his French and Gabonese heritages through an in-depth retrospective that resuscitates the specters of colonization. Jean-Félix relates the story of a French art dealer from the beginning of the 20th century during colonization, looting works of art, artifacts, and relics from the indigenous populations of the Congo Basin. Through a surprising mise-en-abîme, the artist leaps into the past and puts on the costume of a colonist by highlighting the thorny question of a heritage confiscated by Westerners. Jean-Félix, born of a Franco-Gabonese father and a Gabonese mother, chose to draw on his paternal culture the elements which will make the identity of the sculptures he imagines, and which echo the stolen works presented in the project.
