About The Work
Photographer Gaston Zvi Ickowicz’s landscape photographs often illicit emotional or politically charged evocations. The photograph Beit She’arim (Exit) is part of a series entitled B.C., which was photographed mainly in the area surrounding the walls of the Old City in Jerusalem. Though Ickowicz often photographs human subjects, this particular series is completely devoid of portraiture, yet still suggests a lingering human presence. On his personal website, Ickowicz describes his interests in regards to the B.C. series: “I chose to direct the lens downwards at stones, pits, archeological ruins, and different temporal registers, whose condensation into a single photograph infuses the image with a sense of tension, even of threat, while underscoring the interplay between photographic time and historical time.”
