About The Work
Ron Amir uses a large-format analog camera to slowly photograph impoverished or marginalized communities and their environments over extended periods of time. Boards is part of a series entitled Steel Wool, which is comprised of photographs taken between 2009 and 2014 in the Sharon Region of central Israel. Each photograph in the series highlights an instance of ingenuity or resourcefulness in an otherwise scant environment, where an object becomes no longer useful in its intended purpose and transforms to take on a new function. In a world that prizes efficient, mass produced objects, improvisation and adaptation can be understood as subversive actions that challenge conventional definitions of efficiency and productivity.
