About The Work
Employing a lightness of touch across a wide array of references–from cartoons and Hollywood to Modernism–Claudia Comte creates a parallel of our normal interpretation, involving the viewer in a naive complicity. This print was created concurrently with Sharp Sharp (2014), an installation whose structures were constructed to the grid system implied by the architecture of the building and the standard UK size of sheet material. The sheets, which were individually scorched and chainsawed, follow this geometric logic throughout, producing a repetition of form within familial variations. This work follows the tenet of the installation–produced with an arbitrary rule structure and following its own logic from inception, but also invoking the grid’s legacy as a Modernist emblem.
