Warhol was inspired by classical nudes and the erotic depiction of the human body. Warhol would have learned about classical depictions of nudes during his Art History classes at Carnegie Tech, including famous examples such as Venus of Wilendorf and Titian’s Venus of Urbino, The Torso series explores Warhol’s fascination with the intersection of identity, sexuality, and the human body.
