About The Work
Just a few months before his untimely demise at the early age of 34, Yves Klein realized a series of extraordinary Peintures de feu [Fire Paintings] on cardboards. Between 1961 and 1962, he produced no less than 150 artworks in the workshops of the Centre d’Essai de Gaz de France, in Saint-Denis (France). Real tribute to the artist’s audacious performances, some of which were photographed and recorded, those pieces on which Klein stroked the flame of a blowtorch retain the mark of the water sprayed on the canvases or even sometimes of the wet bodies of the models. Combining antagonistic elements, those Fire Paintings embody a moment of synthesis in the artist’s practice. The limited and posthumous edition produced in 2020 in collaboration with the Yves Klein archives is a UltraChrome inkjet print realized after the Peinture de feu sans titre (F124) from 1962. Edition of 100 copies, each print is certified by the artist’s estate’s dry stamp.
