Subodh Gupta is one of the most politic contemporary artists in India, known for transforming objects from Indian working class culture into awe-inspiring installations. Although he generates paintings and videos as well, the theatricality of his readymade is significant—be it gold-painted utensils in the shape of a gigantic flying saucer or an oversized necklace with pots strung upon rope like charms. The artist addresses the prismatic clichés that seep into the common understanding of his homeland. He addresses the dissonance between tradition and globalization, wealth and poverty, politics and religion, and the shifting expectations of Indian life. 

Gupta has exhibited at a number of international institutions including MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Malaga, Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev, Cardiff National Museum, Wales, Queens Museum, New York, Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, South Korea, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum, New York, among many others. He has been featured in Performa 13 in New York, the Taipei Biennial in 2006, the Venice Biennale and Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2005, and the Havana Biennale in 2003.
