About The Work
Scott Reeder's paintings are irreverent parodies that mine art history for different styles; each style gives him the context for a new joke. This unique work is part of Reeder ongoing series of text paintings that combine his virtuoso mixture of humor, painterly skeins, and encyclopedic vocabulary. His combination of pithy ideas and material simplicity complicates the gravitas of his subject—namely the history, styles, and traditions of painting—with saccharine colors and atypical subjects, while challenging established tastes and preconceptions of value.
