The performative works of Oleg Kulik stem from a fascination with the “artist-animal,” exploring the instinctual, bestial, and unashamed facets of the human psyche. Often exposing these characteristics through humor and bizarre juxtaposition, Kulik creates elaborate tableaus that often feature his own body and various animals. In Red Square, from the Russian Series, Kulik depicts himself in Moscow’s infamous square—naked, atop a rearing horse, and accompanied by an English bulldog.
