About The Work
Designer Nurit Kariv and artist Tamara Efrat collaborated for NU to create a modern interpretation of a traditional, antique menorah design. Inspired by the desire to make a functional piece of art that engenders tradition and memory - grandmothers, family, holiday - they searched for an old menorah in the markets of Jerusalem. Next, they produced a concrete mold with the original silver menorah, allowing them to recreate it in a modern handmade clay material. One by one, each menorah is individually molded and bonded together by hand then bisque-fired, hand-glazed, and finally kiln-fired. The result is an elegant, timeless white ceramic menorah with shadowed edges highlighting every detail of the original.
