About The Work
In The Floating World, Sillman fuses pictorial elements with expressive fragments of color to create a towering stack that seems to grow from the ground and reach up to the sky. Some of the recognizable graphics include a group of upturned faces, a pair of bare feet, a hand, and a golden key. Sillman’s idiosyncratic arrangement of objects suggests a variety of elusive narratives, including the relationship between earthly life and the divine. Like all of Sillman’s paintings, the work retains a high degree of poised formality and intentional composition; she uses color to seamlessly blend from one object to the next. Her work examines the relationship between humans, the earth, and the divine and celebrates imagination. Based on the graphic content, it can be interpreted in many ways.
