About The Work
Lyle Ashton Harris's photographs challenge assumptions about gender and race, forcing viewers to confront the faulty nature of those rigid preconceptions. His work also explores the anthropology of images in recalling the past uses of collage as a form of social commentary. In this Set of Five Photogravures, Harris explores iconography, violence, and “negrophilia” through a series of performative self-portraits. Printed using images from the artists’ “Billie, Boxers, Better Days” series, the photogravures depict Harris as a bloodied boxer, jazz legend Billie Holiday and others—using multiple exposure and layered duplicates to create dynamic and visually jarring scenes.
