About The Work
Chuck Close: Summer 2004, an alluring, quasi-voyeuristic image by Joe Fig, is an exceptional example of Fig’s work, which offers glimpses into the studios, private spaces, and processes of acclaimed artists, in this case portraitist Chuck Close—or so it initially seems. In fact, Fig staged this photograph, which belongs to a limited edition of 10, by meticulously crafting a miniature diorama of Close’s studio, including a small model of the artist himself. Fig then shot the photograph from a documentary perspective, with Close’s back to the viewer so as to capture the artist in action. As such, the work challenges assumptions regarding the truth of photography as well as the mythic status of artists in contemporary culture.
