About The Work
Potash takes spironolactone is a drawing that forms part of Jamie Crewe's materials for Potash Lesson, a performance originally shown at the Artists' Moving Image Festival 2016 at Tramway, Glasgow.
Based on a Leonor Fini illustration from an edition of Monsieur Venus by Rachilde, Crewe has added a peineta and mantilla, tartan garters, a shoe, a syringe, a list of foods which lower testosterone production, and a list of potential side effects of the testosterone-blocking drug spironolactone. Rachilde's novel is also a focus of Female Executioner, Crewe's exhibition at Gasworks. Accordingly, a wash made from wood, like that seen on the walls of the gallery, has been applied by the artist to the finished print.
