About The Work
Late Afternoon is a striking example of Hodgkin's printmaking from his 1979 series "The Museum of Art". Comprised of four prints, the series is exemplary of the artist's enmeshed style, blending abstract and representational qualities that culminate into evocative scenes.
Completed in pairs, Hodgkin altered the surfaces of the plates to create subtle atmospheric changes for each set. Late Afternoon was the first of the two, which was subsequently modified with heavy shadows to create the work Early Evening.
The series is included in the collection at the Tate and the National Gallery of Australia.
