About The Work
The artist was painting a series referring to Greek mythology when she created this piece about Persephone and Ascalaphus. The statuette in the background is Persephone, while the little owl is Ascalaphus. In the myth, Ascalaphus was punished for telling the other gods that Persephone ate pomegranate seeds while in Hades, leading to 4 to 6 months of winter. Demeter first pinned him under a heavy rock and later turned him into an eagle owl. Shorr had a collection of much-used objects to populate her imagery. She had a hard time finding an owl, much less an eagle owl.
